With the Monitor's Help

The early Christians, a historian has said, did nothing to help avert the fall of Rome but, instead, lived only for the future heavenly life. It is true that with the fall of Rome, due to darkened views of Deity, the world was plunged into the Dark Ages, and that for centuries Christianity and progress were partially eclipsed. Are the Christians of today either so materially minded or so absorbed in attaining spiritual life for themselves that they have no time to help humanity with its political, social, and economic problems?

Mrs. Eddy has given us many tools with which to work for the succoring of mankind, an important one of which is The Christian Science Monitor. Of divine inspiration were her founding of our newspaper and her expressed desire (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 352, 353) "that every Christian Scientist, and as many others as possible, subscribe for and read our daily newspaper." How can Christian Scientists help the Monitor to "bless all mankind" (ibid., p. 353), unless they read it?

None will deny that there is much evil in the world to be overcome. With the progress of human civilization, political, social, and economic systems seem to become more and more complex; and it is only through dispelling ignorance and choosing the right way that civilization can endure. Many people are awake to the need for reform, yet without spiritual enlightenment the blind will be leading the blind.
