I was sickly as a child, youth, and young man; I recall that on one occasion my mother expressed the fear that I should not live to reach manhood. Moreover, I underwent morbid, unhealthy mental states, deliverance from which was sorely needed. I became an active worker in an orthodox church, but was not satisfied with what it gave me. I prayed earnestly and often that if there was a fuller, truer, more satisfying concept of God and His purposes I might be led into a knowledge of it.

This sincere prayer was answered through the interest of two friends, one of them a Christian Science practitioner, who perceived my need of deliverance. I did not at first recognize what they offered me as being the answer to my prayer. Rather I demurred outspokenly, for what they told me seemed the height of absurdity. It was with much prejudice and many misgivings that I finally consented to read Science and Health. Before this first reading was half completed I became convinced that here indeed was the "pearl of great price," to possess which a man will, as Christ Jesus our Way-shower said, sell all that he has—give up all the false and sinful beliefs with which his mental house is cluttered.

The first physical healing that I experienced was that of a severe condition of the eyes. Through the faithful work of a practitioner, glasses were laid off and a normal condition restored. In the years following, a great deal of work considered trying to the eyes was done without ill effects.
