In July, 1930, after I had been interested in Christian Science for several months, a very severe thunderstorm occurred, which was afterwards reported in the metropolitan press as being one of the most violent and destructive in this vicinity for many years. A distinct sense of fear came over me, but changed to one of peace and protection when I realized that God is more powerful than any phase of storm. Furthermore, I realized that this experience would offer proof of the efficacy of Christian Science in time of need. The house was struck by lightning, but when we inspected the apartment we learned that only superficial damage had been done, and this protection was, to us, proof of God's presence.
The following Wednesday night I wished to give a public expression of my gratitude for this my first personal proof of the validity of Christian Science. When delay prevented our going to church at all, resentment sought expression. Almost instantly, however, a sentence from one of our Leader's writings, came to me: "Action expresses more gratitude than speech" (Science and Health, p. 3). An immediate decision to act dispelled all resentment and led to a further decision to surrender smoking, as my expression of gratitude. From that instant all desire to smoke left me, never to return. This freedom was achieved after some thirteen years of futile efforts to rid myself of the habit by the use of will-power.
Since that time I have been healed of chronic conditions such as constipation, catarrh, frontal sinus trouble, and astigmatism, which required the use of glasses. Also many faults of character have been corrected.
