From my own experience I know that Truth is ever active and does bear fruit. I knew of Christian Science at least twenty-five years ago, but it was not until March, 1923, that there came to me the marvelous, joyous, regenerating experience which is Christian Science healing. A specialist's examination and X-rays had shown tuberculosis of the lungs; and the verdict was that I had but one or two years to live. Increasing weakness made it necessary to have help, and the one engaged was studying Christian Science. She asked me to read, but I was rather indifferent about it. Then one day she asked me how I could know what was in the book unless I read it. That was reasonable, so I started in earnest to read. While studying the chapter entitled "Science of Being" I got up, entirely free from all weakness and with the realization that I was healed. However, a swollen condition of the lower limbs persisted, so I went to a Christian Science practitioner. She asked me if I hated anybody, to which I replied that I certainly did, that I had been badly treated, and should never forgive the person who did it. She tenderly and patiently explained the impossibility of mixing hatred with Christian Science, whereupon the hatred was cast out and I was healed. The same summer I was healed of fatigue through reading a Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly in which occurred the verses Isaiah 40:28–31.

That year we failed in business, and our income was not only cut off, but we were left with several thousand dollars of indebtedness. Through God's guidance I was led to turn to the verse in Haggai which reads: "Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts." I considered this a sufficient answer, and clung to it in the days to come. About this time I received a gift of five dollars. There were many places to put this money, but it was decided to use it in subscribing for the authorized literature. This broke the feeling of limitation, and I have never been without the priceless literature since. One piece of work after another was secured, and at last a position which I kept for four years, during which time I was not absent for a single hour because of sickness. On a holiday, which came on a Saturday, I sprained an ankle. I had help from a practitioner that day and the next, but called her Monday morning to tell her I could not go to work. Back came the clear, confident, joyous answer, "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself'" (Science and Health, p. 385). I got my crutches and walked to work, and at noon walked back without them, completely healed. I am inexpressibly grateful that my husband and I were able to pay all of our debts in less than nine years.

I wish to express my gratitude for the wisdom and unfailing love of the practitioner in dealing with my persistent wrong thinking, also the unselfed love which prompted the presentation to me of Christian Science by that dear helper in our home. The branch church which I joined was full of love and enthusiasm, and was a great inspiration. I was happy to be taken into The Mother Church also, and count it a great privilege to have had class instruction. It is my earnest desire that I may show in my life, in increasingly better thinking and acting and in more love, my deep gratitude to our Leader for her unselfish and devoted work in giving to the world this demonstrable religion, which teaches man's unbroken and unbreakable relationship to God.
