Step by Step

Father, when I have left Thy way
And heedlessly have gone astray,
Still Thou dost follow where I go;
I hear Thy call, so soft and low,
I leave the flowery path before,
And back to Thee I turn once more.

And, step by step, from fears all free,
I follow where Thou leadest me;
Nor questioning Thy loving will,
Nor doubting that Thou lov'st me still.
Though night has come, Thou know'st the way,
I do but follow till the day.

Then through the gloom appears a gleam,
Calm, soft, serene, a heavenly beam—
The path is clear before my feet,
And faintly far is music sweet.
A shining vista is at hand,
A sunlit sky, a spacious strand;
And step by step I follow Thee,
Till heaven I see.
