In 1916 I was in a sad condition mentally and physically
In 1916 I was in a sad condition mentally and physically. Doctors had attended me and I was operated on twice, but nothing helped me. One day a Christian Science practitioner called on me. She spoke of the health that I could realize through the study and understanding of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and she left the book for me to read. But my troubles seemed too great to be healed just by reading a book, and when I tried I could not understand it. I could not walk without pain, and doctors had told me that another operation was necessary. I did not want that. Then I turned to Christian Science for help, and asked the practitioner for treatment. In less than a week I was walking about with ease. There was never any recurrence of the difficulty. Many, including the doctors, who knew how badly I had suffered, were astonished to see me back at work.
With that treatment I was also healed of a bad stomach trouble which I had had from childhood. At times the most simple food would cause great distress so that only an opiate would relieve me. After Christian Science treatment there was never any further trouble.
Some two years later I had a bad attack of congestion of the lungs, and could not lie down. Absent treatment was given, and then I went to bed and slept all night. In the morning I could breathe naturally, but my head ached severely. Again the practitioner was called, and in less than an hour there was no headache, and I was about my work. In many difficulties, by study and striving to get an understanding of the teachings of Christian Science, I have been able to help myself.
