Having received incalculable aid in the past seven or eight years from the testimonies of other students of Christian Science printed in our periodicals, I am grateful for this privilege of giving as well as receiving.
When I first began the serious study of the Christian Science textbook I was a freshman in a large university; and my health was already broken. However, I sought not for physical harmony primarily, but rather for some reliable rule of thinking, speaking, and acting which would lead me out of the discordant conditions that I thought were back of my illness. The acute problem, as I saw it at that time, was financial, aggravated by discord in human relationships. So great was my need that when the textbook came into my hands I eagerly read it from cover to cover. Then I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, although I was not at all sure of the wisdom of doing so.
This first talk with a practitioner revealed to me the extreme confusion of right and wrong in my thinking. With her encouragement I went earnestly to work, obediently studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly each day, reading The Christian Science Monitor and our other periodicals, systematically reading all the writings of Mrs. Eddy, as well as the biography of our Leader by Sibyl Wilbur, and attending the church services. Humbly I have tried to put into practice in my daily living the increased understanding I have gained of God and of man as His perfect idea, subject to no power but that of good. I have tried to follow the instruction in Science and Health (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought;" and I have found to be true the statement that discord will be silenced with harmony.
