Many years ago a great sorrow came to me, and my five children and I were left with no one to take care of us. We were church members, and I often went to the minister to pour out my heart; and he tried to comfort me according to his understanding of God's love. His way of lokking at things was such that he saw the sorrow which had come to my household as resulting from God's will.

After a long time I found a position as an agent. Through this I came in touch with an old acquaintance who, knowing about my situation, made interested inquiries, after which I remarked that God had given me that sorrow. She told me that, according to her understanding, God is Love, and cannot give sorrow. I asked her where she got these thoughts and she answered, "I am studying Christian Science." Full of interest, I asked her if she had any literature about it. She gave me some, which I read. I had many conversations with her, from which Christian Science became clearer to me. But the old religion did not agree with this new one; so that, pondering about the doctrines of both churches, my thoughts were tossed to and fro. I could not even pray in the old way, because this did not satisfy me any more; for until that time had thanked God for all the sorrow that came to me, whereas through Christian Science I understood that perfect Love does not send us any sorrow. I then went again to the minister, telling him that could not remain a member of his church, as I believed in the doctrine of Christian Science.

After this decision I felt entirely happy and made a more earnest study of Christian Science. Convinced that in some way what I believed would be revealed to me, namely, that God does not know anything about sorrow and poverty, and that His all-providing love is omnipresent and all-powerful, my family and I have never lacked what we needed. Healings and other demonstrations have also in many ways given us proofs of the truth of this Science. Through the help of a practitioner my youngest son was healed in three days of what a doctor called pneumonia. My twelve-year-old son had a healing of blood poisoning in his hand.
