The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Tokyo, Japan (Societies of Tokyo and Yokohama).
Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Michel C. Zederbaum, who said:—
A lecture on Christian Science is a joyful occasion and a spiritual feast not only for those who have already been blessed through its study and application, but also for those who long to learn more of God and His ever present love. I know that there are among us many who have been abundantly blessed through the study of Christian Science and the understanding we have gained of the allness and love of God; and I gladly and gratefully testify to the untold blessings which have come to me during the many years since I first became interested in Christian Science.
I have had many proofs that Christian Science heals, that Christian Science alleviates sorrow, distress, and suffering, and that Christian Science destroys sin. In the Gospel of John we read that Jesus at one time made the following statement: "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." How to follow Jesus spiritually and how to gain this "light of life" has been clearly and logically explained of Christian Science, in her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (joint lecture).
Lecturer: Rev. Irving C. Tomlinson; introduced by Leon D. Hansen, who said:—
The power which enabled Jesus to heal the sick, to supply the need of the multitudes, to walk over the waves of stormy seas, is just as operative today as it ever was; and we can prove this in our own experience as we learn the truths of Christian Science. There are hundreds here who have proved it, and, doubtless, hundreds more who would like the assurance that they too can prove it and confidently call upon God in their time of need.
I have proved this in my own experience. I first turned to Christian Science for healing from an injury; later I turned to it when in need of employment. I have turned to it in times of lack, in times of illness, and never has it failed me, nor can it fail; because it is the unchanging law of God.
Kent, Washington (Society).
Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Mrs. Ida Leber, who said:—
When Christian Science was presented to me I did not possess a Bible and had no desire to have one. I was advised by a very dear lady to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and she told me I should be healed of an eye trouble through the reading of this book. I purchased a copy and began reading. I had not read very far when I became possessed with an overwhelming desire to own and read the Bible. Before completing the reading of Science and Health I was entirely healed of the trouble with my eyes, and I began a systematic study of the Bible with the aid of the textbook, which so wonderfully reveals the great truths contained in the Scriptures. I have found this daily study indispensable to my health and happiness. I cannot express in words my gratitude for Christian Science.
Azusa, California (auspices First Church, Glendora).
Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by Jay D. Dean, who said:—
We welcome those who are not Christian Scientists because we know the knowledge of Christian Science will make them more healthful, will add to their well-being and prosperity and give them peace of mind. It will give them a better understanding of their relationship to God and man. We welcome Christian Scientists because the lecture will enlarge their comprehension of the truth about God and His creation. It is this understanding which heals the sick and all inharmonious conditions.
I myself have been healed of inherited diseases and I have seen many healings. My mother was a great sufferer with sick headaches and I seemed to inherit this from her. I suffered greatly until I grew to manhood and began the study of Christian Science. I read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 424) that we must "leave the mortal basis of belief," and this cured me. I have seen a member of our family so ill that he was giben up to die, healed in Christian Science. My sister became so nearly blind that she could neither see to read nor write. She was healed, and after thirty years she can see as well as others of her age.
