I had known of Christian Science for many years and...
I had known of Christian Science for many years and thought it a very beautiful religion, and had attended the services once in a while and enjoyed them. I felt, however, that I was not ready to take up the study and depend upon it, even though I had been ill all my life, because I was afraid to give up medicine. About seven or eight years ago I was taken very ill and the physician who had attended me for six years said I should have to undergo an operation, which he said he had been putting off during these years; he said that there was nothing else to be done. However, I was not willing to leave it all to him, so decided to see another physician, who advised the same thing. My sister, who was a trained nurse, told me of a new doctor in the city and wanted me to see him, which I did. He treated me for two months, but I was no better, and he then informed me that he could not cure me and it would be best for me to have the operation. I was very much discouraged, as my sister and my husband did not want me to go through such an experience, fearing I could not stand it.
On my return from the physician's office I met a lady I had not seen for some time; and when she asked me how I was, I told her the discouraging word I had just received from the last physician who had treated me, and she asked me if I knew anything about Christian Science. I told her I owned a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and that I had seen my mother healed in Christian Science when medical help failed, and that I had thought of it for myself on my way home from the doctor's office. She told me of her healing when meteria medica could not help her. The following evening we attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and the next day I called on a Christian Science practitioner. After two months of loving help I was completely healed. At the same time I was healed of constipation, bilious attacks, loss of appetite, grief, and many other ills. I attended the church services, but spent very little time in the study of Christian Science. In fact, I never read the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly at all, thinking I was doing what was required of me by going to church.
Six months later came the testing time to prove whether or not I was through with medical help. I was taken very ill with a severe case of poisoning. A friend who lived in the same hotel called a Christian Science practitioner, but when my husband came he telephoned to my sister and they wanted a physician. They called one, and later called in two more to decide what the trouble was and to try to help me. I was unconscious part of the time. This went on from Sunday until Thursday. So finally I took my stand and asked if I might have help from a Christian Science practitioner. My husband and my sister consented, since they had seen no improvement under medical care. The practitioner came to see me, and asked me if I was through with materia medica and I told her I was. She began to work for me in Christian Science and in a few hours I sat up in bed and ate my supper and enjoyed it. The next day I was able to walk around in the room, and the following day I went to town. The next week I left for California alone, a distance of over fifteen hundred miles, and made the trip with no ill effect.
