Your correspondent is entitled to hold his own views...

Buxton Advertiser

Your correspondent is entitled to hold his own views with regard to the status of man and his relationship to God, but, in spite of his last letter, the situation remains unaltered; that is, the views expressed in his letters should not be accepted as the teachings of Christian Science.

It is not my purpose in these letters to interpret the meaning of Mrs. Eddy's writings. Each individual must do this for himself as a result of his own study and practice of Christian Science. I have, however, set forth the fundamental teaching of Christian Science with regard to the subject under discussion for the purpose of showing the difference between it and the views expressed by your correspondent. There would therefore appear to be nothing to gain by a continuance of the discussion. It is only just, however, to say that in his reference to the parable of the prodigal son the correspondent does not make it clear that the construction which he puts upon the parable is his own and not Mrs. Eddy's and that the meaning he deduces from the words of the Master to Nicodemus is very different from that indicated by Mrs. Eddy in her writings when referring to this same statement.

Many thousands of people have been and others are daily being healed of sin, disease, sorrow, and poverty by Christian Science treatment based on the fundamental rules of Christian Science referred to in the preceding paragraph. In addition to these, large numbers of cases have been healed quickly and completely by an earnest perusal of the Christian Science textbook referred to in this correspondence. If your correspondent thinks that Christian Scientists are mistaken in their interpretation of this book, then the healing works accomplished on this basis, works which Christ Jesus said should follow them that believe (understand) his teachings, will have to be explained away. If he considers that the fundamental teachings of the Christian Science textbook are incorrect, the same remarks will apply to those salutary effects produced by the book itself.
