The Affirmative Quality of Truth
When we strike a match in a dark room, the same thing always happens: in proportion to the amount of light it gives forth, the darkness is eliminated. This proves that light is actual, positive; whereas darkness, however thick or dense it may seem to be, must be illusive, negative.
We cannot conceive of taking darkness into the presence of light. We know this to be impossible. Consider what would happen if the door between two rooms, one dark and the other brightly lighted, were suddenly thrown open. No slightest vestige of obscurity from the dark room would shadow the brightness of the other, but instantly the clear radiance of the lighted room would flood through the open doorway.
This illustrates the effect of a Christian Science treatment. When we bring the spiritual light of Truth to bear upon the illusion of pain, tribulation, sickness, sin, or affliction of any sort, it displaces the erroneous, negative belief. Although thought may seem to be filled with fear and confusion, the statement that God is good and the only power, present and available everywhere, if made with a realization of its truth, will accomplish much, because fear, confusion, hatred—in fact, the whole agglomeration of the world's unbelief and unrest—are illusive, negative, unsupportable in the presence of enlightened thought.
