In the summer of 1923 I found myself on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This condition was so severe that I had no control of myself. Frequent crying spells made it very embarrassing, for no matter where I happened to be when these spells came on, I could not check them. As I worked in an office, my life was very miserable because of this particular phase of the trouble, and I was concerned at the possibility of losing my position. I was weak, despondent, discouraged, without a ray of hope, and it seemed as if I could not carry on much longer. This condition was caused by an extremely sorrowful experience that came into my life, which later proved to be a blessing, for through it I was led to Christian Science. "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares," writes our dear Leader on page 574 of Science and Health.
One Sunday when the trouble was especially aggravated, I was fervently praying in a blind way and imploring God to help me. Instantly a voice seemed to say. Try Christian Science. Acting upon this leading I immediately made an appointment with a practitioner. With the first treatment I began to improve, and the physical condition was soon healed; but it was a hard struggle to efface the memory of this experience, because at first I was not willing to give up the many false beliefs that were holding me in bondage. Gradually, as Christian Science was understood and practiced in a measure, the mental picture vanished, until for a number of years now it has seemed like a dream.
Another healing for which I am very grateful is that of influenza. One Sunday night during one of the severe so-called epidemics, I became suddenly ill with this disease. I knew that this was another opportunity to prove that Christian Science heals, so I began to work as we are taught to do in this Science. I had very little sleep that night, but the next morning I went to the office as usual. Monday night passed the same way. Although I was endeavoring to pray constantly, I became steadily worse. Tuesday night when I reached home I was so ill that I could not sit up. However, I continued my mental work until a late hour, fell asleep, and awakened the next morning entirely healed. I shall never cease to be grateful to our Leader for having discovered Christian Science.
