An item in your issue of April 27 claimed mistakenly that all mental cures are accomplished by suggestion. Therefore may I state that there is absolutely no relation between the spiritually mental healing method of Christian Science and the procedure of treating the sick by suggestion?

Christian Science follows the method of Christ Jesus, who healed functional and organic diseases, as well as sin, by spiritual means alone, and who said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Hypnotic suggestion, which is one form of mesmerism, was denounced by Jesus. It had no place in the healing work of the Master, and it is not a factor in the cures accomplished by Christian Science.

Christ Jesus' healing works were the natural outcome of knowing the truths which are set forth in the Bible: for instance, that God is Spirit, divine Love, all-powerful and ever present; that the real man is God's image and likeness, and that God tenderly preserves His creation. The Master realized that these truths and their beneficent results are available to all mankind. However, he saw that men and women can utilize the truth effectively only as they attain higher standards of thinking; and he laid much emphasis on the need for individual growth in faith, honesty, loving-kindness, and spiritual understanding. He said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
