An Appreciation of Mary Baker Eddy's Work
Mary Baker Eddy's confidence in the divinity and immortality of the truth which was revealed to her was expressed in the measures she took for the protection and perpetuation of her discovery of the Science of Being, as shown in her establishment of The Mother Church organization.
A central church organization with which constantly multiplying branches should perpetually work in loving cooperation; an impersonal government, embodied in a Manual whose provisions cannot be altered; a self-perpetuating administrative body—The Christian Science Board of Directors—governed by the impartial By-Laws of this Manual; her ordination of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as "Pastor over The Mother Church" (Manual, Art. XIV, Sect. 1); the establishing of The Christian Science Publishing Society—these constitute an impregnable safeguard against disrupting influences, such as have often blighted, and even wrecked, other valuable efforts for the uplifting of mankind.
As one studies the breadth and scope of Mrs. Eddy's work, one cannot fail to be impressed with her divinely directed plan for the perpetuation of Christian Science activities; and in these days of flux and transition her followers derive endless encouragement, confidence, and strength from this realization. They know that throughout the centuries the Christian Science movement will continue to carry out the inspired purpose of its Founder. The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, is the nucleus of ever increasing branch churches, wherein an unending stream of worshipers will continue, as now, to gather for the Sunday services and participate in the Wednesday testimony meetings.
