Standing Porter

Why do Christian Scientists need to "stand porter at the door of thought," as our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has admonished us to do on page 392 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"? Correct answers to that question might vary as to form of statement, but in their substance there would be unity. One answer might convey a desire to overcome a besetting weakness of what is called temperament; another, the desire to master belief in the reality of some physical ailment; but behind both these answers, and all others honestly expressed, would be the longing to draw nearer to God, to the pure, omnipotent Mind wherein all being is perfect, harmonious, joyous, free.

To be steadfast Christian Scientists we must heed the words of Peter, written to the elders of the early church: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." Only by so doing can we render powerless the attacks of evil and bring out in all its beauty, unselfishness, and spiritual completeness God's perfect pattern for our lives. We need to be certain we are doing all things to insure our spiritual growth, through the spiritualizing of our consciousness.

We need to be sure that all our abilities are enlisted on the right side in the battle for righteousness; that we understand the rules as well as the objectives of the divine method of warfare. We need to be always receptive to the truth that comes to the awakened spiritualized consciousness. We need to know better how to heal; how by tender, compassionate, understanding love to repeat the works of our Master. We need to be prepared at all times, with armor on, to meet and destroy error in its various forms, and to avoid being deceived or lulled to sleep by its false arguments.
