A Prayer

Dear God, before Thee here I meekly bow,
And pray that Thou wouldst teach me humbleness.
Oh, show me how to open wide my heart,
That Thou may'st fill it with Thy righteousness.
I do not seek for easing of the flesh;
I do not yearn for fleshpots, nor for gold;
I only pray, dear Lord, that I may thresh
And clean my thoughts, and purify them, so
That I may, as I go along my way,
Give to my brother water, clear and cold.
And as I hold the Lord, may I see
That same dear brother, each and every day,
Made in God's image, Christlike, perfect, free,
And help him walk the road serene to Thee.

Dear God! may I receptive be,
And learn the lesson of humility.
