The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Brookline, Massachusetts (auspices of The Mother Church).

Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Miss Mary G. Ewing, who said:—

To those of us who have had direct personal experience of the healing of sickness and sorrow and sin through Christian Science, it is a joy to share with others the knowledge of the gift it brings—a precious gift at all times, but one fraught with a special blessing in this hour of recognition of the world's great need. Christian Science repeats and explains the teaching of Jesus as to the spiritual nature and origin of life, and proclaims anew the law of unchanging and unerring love which, when understood and applied to human affairs, governs them aright. In this way Christian Science offers us a demonstrable basis for right thought and action—a clear, logical, and simple explanation of our human experience, and a solution of its problems. Tonight we have an opportunity to learn of this new, yet old, gospel of health and holiness.

St. Louis and University City, Missouri (joint lecture).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Charles A. Weber, who said:—

Today the world is not so indifferent to, nor unmindful of, the practical nature of Christian Science, of its healing efficacy and of its power to regenerate and transform the human mind, as it was. This is attested by the growth in number of its adherents and the ever increasing multitude of those turning to this truth and finding therein surcease from the fears and miseries which beset them, through acquiring a measure of understanding of what constitutes the real selfhood of man and his relation to God, whom Christian Science reveals as infinite good, the only Mind and cause. An approximation to this relationship enables one materially to lessen the sense of fear which quite generally afflicts mankind; for in Christian Science we learn that we do not have to be afraid, because God did not make us so. As it is written in the Scripture: "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Speaking for myself I can truthfully say I am less fearful now than I was before taking up this Science.

Christian Science has also healed me of many so-called discordant conditions, mental, moral, and physical, and has restored me from the effects of the destructive thought manifested in accident. Isaiah declares, "Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear;" and Christian Science teaches us how to utilize this truth for our salvation from evil.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Fifth Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Miss Mary Jane Roberts, who said:—

Perhaps to some of you who are listening to a Christian Science lecture for the first time this question may present itself: Does Christian Science heal? May I tell you how this question was answered for me? Some years ago a neighbor of ours fell from a derrick and was seriously injured; in fact, the physician who was called stated that he was beyond human aid. A relative of this neighbor then called a Christian Science practitioner, and treatment was given, with the result that this gentleman was healed and resumed his normal activities. This awakened me to the fact that Christian Science heals. A few years later, when a member of our family was suffering from an ulcerated stomach and material aid had failed, we too called for Christian Science treatment and healing followed. It was the first of many healings which we have experienced in our home through the ministrations of Christian Science. It convinced me that Christian Science heals.

Norwich, New York (Society).

Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Leslie J. Adams, who said:—

On the first page of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," written by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, we find these words: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Through the study and application of the truth which is found in the Bible, in the writings of Mrs. Eddy, and in the authorized Christian Science literature, we are able to gain this spiritual understanding which, when rightly applied, will meet our every need.

In my own personal experience, when I first began the study of Christian Science, I was healed of double pneumonia in a few hours by the work of a Christian Science practitioner whom I had never seen, and who was ninety miles distant. This was indeed a proof to me of the healing power of this wonderful truth. Later I was healed of eczema, high blood pressure, pleurisy, and several other physical ailments. I was also healed of the tobacco habit after using tobacco for more than twenty years; and just imagine my joy at being relieved of this habit after trying many times to get rid of it through will-power, but with no avail. These healings have all been permanent; they occurred several years ago; and words are inadequate to express my gratitude.
