Joyful Liberation

A beautiful canary sang gayly, the while springing back and forth from his swing to his perch within the upper portion of his cage. A student of Christian Science noted that whenever he sang he sprang to the upper perch or swing. While in the higher positions, he broke forth into clear, ringing song. Thinking the cageling would enjoy a wider range for his activities, the student opened the door of the cage, but the bird disdained to notice the open door. For many days the experiment was repeated, but with the same result. The canary continued to spring to his perch or swing, where he sang merrily. As the light of love filled the observer's consciousness, the bird's actions assumed a new meaning, applicable to daily living.

Knowing that man is an idea of infinite Mind, we can sing praises to God regardless of our small or spacious living quarters. Mortal mind would tempt us with the suggestion that we might have greater cause for song if we lived elsewhere. We are prone to think a change of location or place would bring greater happiness and independence. Some may even think to gain freedom by way of an open door to false worldly pleasures, instead of seeking God and learning of the true open door.

Like the bird, must we not seek to gain a higher outlook? What we need is not merely a change of place, but the spiritual elevation to that position of clear thinking wherefrom we can see God, good, as omnipotent. Mary Baker Eddy gives all true seekers of freedom this admonition (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." Only by such rising and reliance on God, divine Mind, can a right and harmonious outlook and liberty be obtained.
