In the fall of 1922, after being under the care of medical specialists for many years without benefit, I was told by one noted specialist that medical science could do no more for me, but perhaps Christian Science could help. He said he did not understand it, but his aunt had been healed of cancer in its last stages after medical science had failed, and he had witnessed that healing, as it took place in his own home.
I have since learned to be very grateful to that specialist for his advice, although at that time it was little appreciated. Many more months of suffering were yet to come before I was ready and willing to turn humbly to God in prayer and ask Him to show me what to do, promising obedience. Although I knew nothing of Christian Science and had given no thought to it since the physician had suggested it, one morning, as in answer to my prayer, came the suggestion, Try Christian Science. At first it was thrust aside, but as the thought persisted, I went to the telephone and asked "Information" if I might be connected with a Christian Scientist. A stranger in a large city, I was grateful for the promptness with which I was connected with the Christian Science Reading Room. There later I found a Journal, chose a practitioner, and asked for help. Bordering on nervous prostration, I entered his office in doubt and fear—but oh! the joy and peace that came to me during that first hour. When I left his office I was quiet and happy, but still in doubt.
The next few weeks were wonderful ones to me, full of unfoldment and God's rich blessings, as erroneous thoughts began to give place to God's good ones, and the discordant conditions began to fade away into their native nothingness. During those first few weeks I was healed of severe ulceration of the stomach and intestinal trouble, insomnia of several years' standing, and extreme nervousness. I experienced an instantaneous healing of inflammatory rheumatism, and in two weeks' time my eyes were healed of a condition which for many years had necessitated wearing very strong glasses. I had reached a point where these no longer gave comfort. The oculist said that no glasses would ever help me much and that I should probably lose my sight within two years. For the past nine years I have been without glasses altogether, constantly working and reading with no discomfort or impaired sight.
