Bud and Blossom

As the bleakness of winter yields to the appeal of spring, the bud loosens, expands, unfurls, and lo! the flower. Spring is a time of unfoldment, expression, fruition of long pent-up promises.

In human experience there may be periods of bleakness, of sorrow, reserve; and many an individual is aware of right desires secreted in his heart, but as yet undeveloped. Christian Science calls these desires into full expression through the law of good; and throughout this process of reaching up to a higher standard the bud of promise should be shielded from harshness or discouragement either from within or from without.

One who has not yet succeeded in attaining the higher moral and spiritual standard to which he aspires must encourage his own growth by acknowledging the divinity of his aspiration and the certainty of its fulfillment. His right desire shows that he has begun to glimpse the fact that God, good, is infinite and supreme. However slow may be the passage from failure to fruition, it must be attended throughout by loving patience and tireless encouragement both in the individual's attitude towards himself and also in the attitude of those associated with him who are working out their salvation a little farther along the heavenly trail. When words are hesitant, and humiliating confessions hover on the lips, one should wait for their slow utterance, for at this juncture a slighting remark or a harsh counsel might act as frost acts on a bud. Sensitiveness, self-consciousness, and self-distrust may seem stubborn, and genuine patience may be required in conquering them.
