Guidance

Several years ago the writer was trying to make a decision in regard to a change of position. The opinions of friends were so divided that they seemed to hinder rather than help him. After mentally wandering in indecision for several days without arriving at any conclusion, he asked a Christian Scientist to help him. It became evident that up to this point the question had been considered entirely from a material and selfish viewpoint. Now he was advised to give up the idea of trying to decide anything himself; to let God guide him; to be willing to be where he could do the most good; and to realize that in the realm of the real each idea of the Father is eternally in his right place. That evening, while he was studying the weekly Lesson-Sermon, all doubt and uncertainty vanished from his thought until there seemed to be but one desirable thing to do, and he joyfully announced to friends that the question was settled. The answer to this problem was so positive that the writer has never forgotten the experience; and he has learned to know when divine intelligence, instead of human will, is directing.

"For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." This statement by Mrs. Eddy, on page 492 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," may seem strange to some. But let us put aside material opinions and briefly examine it under the light of Christian Science.

Jesus said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." Does not this mean that we are to honor, adore, and think of God as Spirit and Truth? "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." This statement by Jesus implies that God's creation, including man, is like Him—is spiritual. John said, "All things were made by him." Then is not spiritual existence, instead of the fable of materiality, the one fact to be kept before our thought if we would reason correctly when endeavoring to solve our problems?
