The reading of an editorial in a Christian Science Sentinel,...
The reading of an editorial in a Christian Science Sentinel, in which the writer speaks of the spread of atheism in the world today, reminded me of my great debt to Christian Science.
My parents were members of a Protestant church and I had the opportunity for religious instruction, but as a child I did not accept it. I rebelled at certain interpretations of the Scriptures, and scoffed at others. Womanhood was reached without any church affiliation and with no religious inclinations whatever. The Bible was a sealed book. Eventually I drifted into atheism. Many times I longed for the comfort that friends seemed to get from their church membership, but I saw that their prayers were often unanswered. As the years passed, no sure anchorage was found. Atheism offered nothing but uncertainty, and I found myself in the quicksands of pessimism, despondency, and extreme fear, intensified by the beliefs of egotism, self-righteousness, intellectualism, and other tenacious errors. Existence seemed a failure, and nothing kept me from self-destruction except regard for the feelings of a relative.
It was at this juncture that I bought a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As I think of it now, my sole reason for getting the book was the hope that it might show me the way to happiness. I had noticed that Christian Scientists were happy people. But before I had read far in this book there came a light into my consciousness that lifted me to the mount "where God is revealed" (p. 241). It was only a little gleam of Truth, but it was sufficient to heal me instantaneously and permanently of atheism.
