The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Boston, Massachusetts (The Mother Church).
Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by George Shaw Cook, who said:—
The purpose of these public lectures on Christian Science is not to entertain but to instruct. Their primary purpose is to acquaint those who are seeking correct information on the subject with some of the fundamental teachings of Christian Science and with some of the facts about its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. On page 345 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written, "When the omnipotence of God is preached and His absoluteness is set forth, Christian sermons will heal the sick." The lecture to which we are about to listen will declare the omnipotence of God and will set forth His absoluteness. May we not, therefore, expect that it will heal? I am sure that having listened to the lecturer's message with attention and receptivity, we shall leave here to-night greatly benefited by what we have heard.
Detroit, Michigan (Third Church).
Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Maurice W. Kempthorne, who said:—
I can personally testify that Christian Science heals. The attention of my family was first drawn to this subject many years ago through the healing of a friend of severe stomch trouble after all other means had failed. Shortly after this a member of my family was told by a physician that a surgical operation would be necessary to remove an abnormal growth. Instead of submitting to this, however, it was decided to rely wholly upon Christian Science. The result was that in a very short time she was perfectly healed. These healings, together with many which I myself have experienced, have proved to me conclusively that Christian Science is a demonstrable, practical religion, one affording proof of its words by works.
Frankfort, Kentucky (Society).
Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Frances Taylor Saffell, who said:—
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, on page 496, we find these words: "Your fruits will prove what the understanding of God brings to man." I have been healed of many false traits of character and disposition, as well as of physical diesease, including blood poisoning when it was thought by some that I should lose my leg, also of tonsillitis. One morning I was conscious of a sore throat. By four o'clock it had developed into a severe case of tonsillitis. At seven o'clock a telegram was sent to a practitioner asking for help. The condition remained the same until about midnight, when I fell asleep. I slept all night, and when I awoke the following morning I had not a vestige of sore throat.
Yuma, Arizona (Society).
Lecturer: Algernon Hervey Bathurst; introduced by Mrs. Kittie Czuczka, who said:—
The Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy opens with these encouraging words (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." When I first became interested in Christian Science, I did not take it up for physical healing. But since then I have been healed of influenza and liver trouble of long standing, chronic sick headache, and ulcers; and, best of all, I am grateful for the spiritual understanding and the wonderful peace of mind I have attained. Jesus said: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
Syracuse, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Earl S. Crawford, who said:—
"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." With these inspiring words Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, opens the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." May I relate an experience which proved the truth of that encouraging statement? It occurred at a Christian Science lecture held in this city about three years ago. A woman living in a small village one hundred and seventy-five miles away was very sick. Her physicians had told her that an operation was necessary to save her life. While in this fearful state of thought she received an invitation from a relative in this city to attend a Christian Science lecture. Recognizing in this a ray of hope for the freedom she was seeking, she made the trip and attended the lecture seeking the Godgiven truth which Christian Science unfolds. She returned home after the lecture, purchased a copy of Science and Health and began earnestly to study. Within two weeks she was healed of a large abdominal tumor; and in less than a year, through the help of a Christian Science practitioner, she was healed of cancer, varicose veins, and the wearing of glasses. This is only one of a great number of authenticated cases of healing of all manner of discord which Christian Science has to its credit.
