[Semiannual Report of Committee on Christian Science Work in the Army and Navy at Los Angeles, California]

The Christian Science churches and societies of Southern California, which are participating in the Army and Navy work at Los Angeles, may well have cause for rejoicing in the fruitage.

During the past six months forty-nine new patients at the hospitals and sixteen new patients at the company rooms have become interested in Christian Science. Seventeen cases have been discharged from the hospitals as arrested or healed cases, due to the ministration of Christian Science.

A lively interest in Christian Science has been caused at one of the Government hospitals by the complete recovery of a young man whose healing of one lung was reported in our previous report. This young man, when admitted to the hospitals, was suffering from tuberculosis of both lungs. An X-ray picture revealed a cavity a little larger than a silver dollar. After six months' treatment in Christian Science, a picture was taken which showed a complete healing of this cavity in the left lung. This healing aroused the interest of the doctor in charge, and when, a few months later, another picture was taken, which showing, a complete healing of both lungs, not even a scar showing, the doctor stated that never in his experience had he witnessed such a healing, for it was complete in every respect.

It has been necessary to purchase twelve new copies of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for use among the patients. In addition to the abundance of used literature, which is so kindly given the Committee by the various Reading Rooms and churches, the Committee subscribes for eighteen Monitors and four Sentinels, which are sent direct from Boston to the several warships at San Pedro. An investigation of how these periodicals were being used resulted in finding that they were being passed from man to man until practically worn out, the captain of one of the vessels, an Episcopalian, even refusing to sit down to his breakfast until the Monitor was brought to him.

At the request of the chaplain, a Christian Science service was held on board the U. S. S. Oklahoma on October 4. The service was well attended.

[From a quarterly Report of the Christian Science Prison Committee for the State of New York]

The work of the Committee is progressing steadily and harmoniously. Regular Christian Science services have been held at six state correctional institutions without interruption. The consecrated steadfastness of our prison workers is a source of joy and gratitude to all. The healings resulting from their work are proving the truth of the Master's words, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

One of the men reported to the Christian Science worker that his study of Christian Science had changed his attitude entirely towards the prison authorities. Another had a beautiful healing of hatred. Still another has found that striving to see God's image and likeness everywhere has changed his attitude toward his keepers and, in consequence, his keepers' attitude toward him. The Committee is going forward conscious that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 450), "the Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death."
