In March, 1929, I first learned what Christian Science really is. For nearly two years previous to that time I had been incapacitated with heart trouble, had given up all hope of getting relief, and expected death at any moment. I had been doctoring for the same trouble at intervals for fifteen years or more. In the summer of 1927, when I was in the employ of a railroad company as a carpenter, my condition became so critical that I had to give up work. The company doctor, by whom I was treated, ordered complete rest. After about a month, in which I got no better, he said I should never recover sufficiently to do any hard work again. I then changed doctors four times. All prescribed the same sort of medicine to be taken three or four times a day; and they were all of the same opinion, that I could never expect to get any better. I was told that my condition was due to enlarged heart, with valvular defects and heart lesions; that I might have a stroke at any moment, or might even drop dead at any time. I had recourse to chiropractors and herbalists, too, in an effort to get even temporary relief, but had no success.
During the first few months of my illness I experienced great difficulty in getting around; however, after some time I got a little better, so that I was able to walk about five blocks. I thank God for that improvement, as it enabled me to get around more and I obtained some light work to do.
By this time I had reached the conclusion that to get help I must seek something higher than human aid. I had been raised in one of the so-called orthodox churches and knew there was nothing in it for me. I had left it many years before. The Bible I had never studied much, but among the few passages which I remembered was one in Matthew, "Seek, and ye shall find," and I thought it was a good injunction to follow. So with that thought in mind I began visiting different churches and religious services in the hope that I might find one which would help. Some of those which I visited claimed to have healing power, but I derived no benefit from them. In this way I kept on until I thought I had visited every place where there might be any hope of relief.
