In 1912 Christian Science was presented to me by a friend who had been healed of many physical ailments. At that time I believed my ills too serious to be healed through Christian Science, although I knew nothing about its teachings.
In 1913, however, my condition was causing me so much suffering and distress that I was ready to turn to God and accept the teachings of Christian Science. A practitioner came to my home, and I asked for an explanation of the God who heals. Verses from the Bible were read to me, also the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation as given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 16, 17). I was healed instantaneously. The next day I purchased the textbook. Later I found that I was reading Science and Health, but was becoming lazy when it came to studying it. The result was that my thoughts became disturbed.
At one time intense pain caused me to call a practitioner for help. After three days I dismissed the practitioner and decided to call a dentist for an appointment. After an examination the dentist told me that the suffering was caused by an abscessed tooth, and that the condition was dangerous, as the pus had no way out except by extraction of the tooth. He knew I was a student of Christian Science, and said he knew that Christian Science had done many wonderful things and he would leave it to me to decide whether or not an X-ray photograph should be taken. Immediately I realized the need of more divine intelligence and understanding. I came home, called the practitioner, and admitted that I had let the wrong thought into my consciousness and said that I was ready to have all thoughts that were not good rebuked. The advice from the practitioner was for me to love more and to read the textbook understandingly, because it would help to generate my thought.
