The Meek

"Quiet of meekness"!* Can there be
A holier, happier state than this?
A more exalted ecstasy,
A purer, more enduring bliss?

Quiet they know not, who in pride,
Self-love, self-confidence, hold sway:
Not in vain dreams does peace abide,
Nor with false hopes contentment stay.

Quiet they shall be and at rest,
This of the righteous Scripture saith;
Secure the meek and quiet breast,
From fear of evil, threat of death.

Quiet enfolds him who no more
In human will puts confidence;
His trust in God an open door
To angels of omnipotence.
