I had never been a strong woman, and near the end of...
I had never been a strong woman, and near the end of 1899 I had a complete breakdown. This was followed by an operation which left me in such a condition that in six months I was again in a hospital for a second operation. For a few years after this I was much better, but then came a severe attack of nervous prostration, and for the next three or four years I was either in the hospital or at home with a trained nurse. I am sure I should never have recovered from this attack but for the unceasing kindness and patience of the physician and the nurses who attended me.
Finally, however, I was myself again; and about this time we moved to Los Angeles. The first year I was here I was well, but the second year the old nervousness returned and for about three years I was again in bed more than half of the time. Friends tried to interest me in Christian Science, but I was so prejudiced against what I thought it to be that I would have nothing to do with it. But as time went on and I could get no help I decided to look into it, although I could not believe it would help me. My family were all so opposed to my doing such a foolish thing that it was some months before I sent for a practitioner, but when I finally did so I was healed in the first treatment, and from that time was stronger than I had ever been. Nervous indigestion, from which I was suffering, also left me at this time. With this healing came the most wonderful spiritual uplifting, and all my troubles and weaknesses disappeared. I went out that evening and walked farther than I had for months, and I shall never forget how beautiful everything was. I thought I had found heaven and I surely had, for my thought and condition indicated heaven as Mrs. Eddy defines it in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 587).
