In Christian Science God is defined as infinite Spirit or Mind. Therefore in Christian Science the commandment or law, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," can be interpreted as, Thou shalt have no other Spirit or Mind but God, eternal good.

How can one begin to be obedient to this law? By gaining a true conception of the nature of the God—one Mind—and then striving to follow Paul's exhortation, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." Christ Jesus said, "There is none good but one, that is, God." Therefore the one divine Mind, God, is good. Consequently, to be obedient to the command, Thou shalt have no other Mind but God, is to strive to have no other thoughts but good—to express only the perfect attributes of the divine Mind, such as health, harmony, courage, confidence, love, joy.

This constant endeavor excludes from consciousness disease, discord, cowardice, fear, hate, which so-called qualities are found to be unreal, untrue, because they proceed from the so-called carnal or mortal mind, or evil, which Christ Jesus designated as "a liar." Thus through conscious, constant mental practice in striving to reflect only the attributes of the Mind which is God, an individual becomes obedient to the law of God, and receives the blessing of obedience to this law in the fruit of the Spirit—the consciousness of health, harmony, courage, confidence, love, joy.
