At a time when everything seemed very dark to me some...

At a time when everything seemed very dark to me some fellow passengers on the train which was bringing my family and me back from California, where we had unsuccessfully sought health and happiness, earnestly assured us that Christian Science was our only hope. Although before then I had turned a deaf ear to friends mentioning Christian Science, this time I promised to try it. A few days after reaching New York I attended a Sunday evening service in a branch church. My thought was too confused to realize any benefit. However, on leaving I met an usher whom I knew. After a few minutes' talk with me, he obtained a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, opened it at page 22 and lovingly urged me to read lines 11 to 22.

After reading these two paragraphs over a second time I seemed to see a break in the clouds and a ray of light coming through. This was the first ray of sunshine penetrating into that awful abyss in which I was then seemingly engulfed, and I walked out of the church greatly uplifted. I shall never cease being grateful to that usher, who was alert enough to sense my need and give me the cup of cold water in Christ's name, and to all the ushers the world over for their consecrated work, which helps to bring about so much peace, harmony, and resultant healing at our church services and lectures.

I was then impelled to take up the study of Christian Science in earnest, and soon realized the necessity and importance of its systematic study. At first the road seemed very difficult because of the opposition from members of my family; but nothing could hinder me and I persisted, for which I am most grateful.
