The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Asheville, North Caroling (First Church).
Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by Loyd P. Lindsey, who said:—
Christian Science came into my experience in early childhood, when my mother was restored to perfect health and activity, after one of the best physicians of this city had stated that she was suffering from three incurable troubles. When I was about five years old I had a remarkable healing that came as a result of the application of Christian Science. The end of a finger was completely severed just below the root of the nail, but in less than four weeks' time it was almost impossible to tell which finger had been cut because new flesh and a new nail had grown.
For a number of years I turned away from Christian Science and joined another church; but, after suffering from several severe disorders, I sought help through Christian Science and was completely healed. That was nearly twenty years ago, and since that time Christian Science has been my only physician. During these years I have seen many persons healed quickly and permanently of tuberculosis, heart trouble, Bright's disease, broken bones, influenza, insanity, and many other ailments, through Christian Science treatment. Anyone who is sincere and open-minded may prove for himself that Christian Science has restored primitive Christianity. It reveals a God of love, "who" as the Psalmist says, "forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life form destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies."
La Crosse, Wisconsin (First Church).
Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Thomas B. Gantenbein, who said:—
One afternoon, seven or eight years ago, while at my place of business I was called home, being told over the telephone that something serious had occurred. Upon arriving I found that a member of the family had suffered a so-called stroke. She was unable to move or speak and appeared to be in great fear, as were others in the house.
With the meager understanding of Christian Science I possessed, I set to work to know God's allness and to realize that, as Mrs. Eddy has said (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 151), "Fear never stopped being and its action." In a short time the afflicted one was free, and so complete was the restoration that one member of the family, who had been at work in the garden and had not been called, upon entering the house a short time later was unaware that anything unusual had happened.
Jesus of Nazareth was richly endowed with the Christspirit, the Christ-understanding, which enabled him to perform the remarkable healings described in the New Testament. Christian Science is bringing to light the qualities of the Christ, and teaches us how we may possess them and employ them as did Jesus, scientifically and successfully.
Norwalk, Connecticut (First Church).
Lecturer: Rev. Irving C. Tomlinson; introduced by Orin E. Carpenter, who said:—
Christian Scientists all over the world are each day increasingly grateful because, through the teachings of Christian Science, they are gaining a better understanding of God and man's relation to Him. We are also grateful because the Bible has become an open book and very dear to us. We have found that God is not a mighty potentate, far off, who loves and hates and causes diseases and financial troubles, but a God of love, peace, joy, and harmony, who heals all our diseases and distressing conditions—a God who is ever present. On page 39 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read: "'Now,' cried the apostle, 'is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,'—meaning, not that now men must prepare for a future-world salvation, or safety, but that now is the time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and in life."
Ottawa, Illinois (First Church).
Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by William S. Walker, who said:—
We are here for the purpose of hearing a lecture on a subject that is interesting millions of people, for it is conceded that a large part of the civilized world is today deeply interested in learning more about God and His true creation, man. Christian Science is, through the study of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, explaining in a most practical way about God and His creation, and also teaching us how to carry out the commands of Christ Jesus as given to us in the Bible, not only in the overcoming of sin, but also in the healing of disease. We who are students of Christian Science know that through the honest application of its teachings and an absolute reliance on God all manner of diseases are healed and sin and sorrow are overcome. I was first attracted to Christian Science nearly thirty years ago through the healing of a member of my family after several of the leading physicians of the country had said she could never be well. She was healed completely in a few weeks, and is today enjoying perfect health. I, too, have had many proofs of its healing power.
