Much is said about Christian Science in our day
Much is said about Christian Science in our day. Matter, Mrs. Eddy teaches in her textbook [Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures], is the opposite of Life, Truth, Spirit. It is devoid of all reality. Matter is error, hallucination. If matter were real, there would be a power besides omnipotence. Where the spirit of God is manifest, error is proved nonexistent. It is seen as an error, as a lie. The author [Mrs. Eddy] says man is God's reflection. At one time when I saw the gold of the setting sun light up a room so that the darkness was all banished, I understood the significance of the word "reflection" as applied to man. When I was a young country pastor, a friend, a physician, once called me to a woman about to die. The husband and children were standing at her bed, weeping. After praying the Lord's Prayer the glorious thought came to me that God is Love. I bade the mother shut out all thought of death and be strong with God. This woman still lives as a witness to the power of true prayer. Where, in Jesus' time, was this life-energy? It was buried under Pharisaism, sin, and the load of poverty. Jesus substantiated his teaching by his work. He healed sickness of every sort through the power of God. Jesus was above matter and the world. Even when about to carry his cross on his way to Calvary he comforted his disciples with the words: "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
I and my Father are one;" I am His reflection. Scorn was Jesus' portion for revealing man's unity with God, for healing sickness and suffering, and for destroying or forgiving sin. His times were unable to appreciate his mission. Even today his followers are scorned. Where is the Mind of Jesus Christ? War is selfish, materialistic striving. It is a question of political parties and supply. Have the churches preached spiritual truths? Had it been so, consecration and spiritual enrichment would have been the result. They affect piety and are profiteers. Did we not already have Christian Science, we would want to pray it down from heaven.
