Evening News
In the Evening News of July 1, a telegraphic report of the death of a lady who died from injuries received in a car accident is headed, "Christian Scientist Refused Medical Aid—And Died!" These words misrepresent Christian Science in their implication that death resulted because a definite remedial agency, such as medical aid, was rejected. The coroner in his findings in connection with this case found no cause for a suggestion of neglect, while he thought medical aid "might" have been useful.
Death under the system of allopathic medical practice is a daily occurrence and goes without comment. Why then should it be "passing strange" when a healing in Christian Science has not been effected? Students of Christian Science know that Christian Science is not at fault because of any failure on their part. "The rule and its perfection of operation never vary in Science. If you fail to succeed in any case, it is because ... you have not obeyed the rule and proved the Principle of divine Science" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 149). That this truth is true and demonstrable is evidenced by the innumerable cases of healing (many of them having been pronounced incurable) which are taking place every day not alone in Australia but all over the world.
Christian Scientists have no quarrel with the practitioners of materia medica or with those who seek them for help. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says (ibid., p. 164), "It is just to say that generally the cultured class of medical practitioners are grand men and women." Christian Scientists desire to practice their religion in obedience to the teachings of the master Metaphysician.
