Our Opportunity

To all the visitors who come to Boston at the time of the Annual Meeting, The Mother Church with its loving welcome stands as a symbol of he motherhood of God, "all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 587); and the Publishing House with its various activities may be regarded as symbolizing the providence of Truth, of divine Mind, supplying the needs of the children of men.

The first time the writer of this article visited the Publishing House, she was struck with the world-wideness of its activities. As she watched the machines, with the regularity of clockwork printing and mailing out the Christian Science periodicals to all the Field, thus feeding the multitudes, her heart went out to God in deep gratitude for His loving provision, made available through Mrs. Eddy's obedient and courageous life.

But when a few years later the plans of the new Publishing House were kindly shown to this writer by a friend, and the vastness, comfort, and beauty of its lines and proportions struck her eyes, she wondered how Christian Scientists could ever be grateful enough for The Mother Church and for the Board of Directors' obedience to Article I, Section 7, of the Church Manual, under the heading, Publishing Buildings, which reads: "It shall be the duty of the Christian Science Board of Directors to provide a suitable building for the publication of The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, Der Herold der Christian Science, and all other Christian Science literature published by The Christian Science Publishing Society. It shall also be the duty of the Christian Science Board of Directors to provide suitable rooms, conveniently and pleasantly located in the same building, for the publication and sale of the books of which Mary Baker Eddy is, or may be, the author, and of other literature connected therewith."
