I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing but because I was seeking an answer to my questions about God, which the orthodox church of which I was a member could not give me. I thought the teachings of Christian Science beautiful, but it was a few years before I could entirely give up dependence on medicines and doctors.
Shortly after my marriage I was told by a surgeon that I had an internal displacement which could be healed only by an operation, but that the operation would have to be postponed until I recovered from kidney trouble, which I had in a severe form. He prescribed medicine and a diet. I continued to study Christian Science literature and had help from a practitioner; but I became discouraged and went to see the practitioner to tell her I thought I should have to submit to the operation. She explained that God is the only healer. On the way home I became so grateful for Christian Science that I determined to live up to its teachings to the best of my ability, even if I were never healed of the physical difficulty. The result was an instantaneous healing of the displacement. I arrived home and ate anything I wanted, and within a week there was no trace of the kidney trouble.
Since then I have had many healings. I am grateful for aid received at the birth of our three children. At the birth of one the attending physician said the child could not be born without a Caesarian operation; but I was receiving aid from a practitioner, and the operation was proved unnecessary.
