Childlikeness

One of the sweetest, fairest scenes,
In memories of Galilee,
Is that of Jesus in the midst
Of childish happiness and glee.

In thought we see the little ones
Lean trustingly against his knee,
His loving arms around them thrown
In tenderest security.

Forbid them not, we hear him say,
Laying his hands with gentle touch
Upon each head—Forbid them not,
The heavenly kingdom is of such.

O little ones of long ago,
And little children here to-day,
You teach us by your purity
To follow in the Christly way,

To come to Love's dear arms in faith,
Knowing that we have naught to fear,
And only peace and joy can find
Within that Presence, close and dear.

God sees in us, His little ones,
Only reflections, sweet and pure,
Of His own nature; and this truth
Will all our sin and sorrow cure.
