A Prayer for Compassion

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.—Ezekiel 36:26.

Teach me the smile of compassion,
Humanity's hope to refresh;
Take away the heart that is stony,
And give me a new heart of flesh.

Teach me compassion's forgiveness,
Which knows there is naught to forget,
Teach me the joy of true patience,
Where follows no trail of regret.

Give me the tears of compassion,
Not bitter, rebellious, and vain,
But shining clear with sweet mercy,
And cleansing—like summer's kind rain.
