Long before I was willing to study earnestly or even to read anything about Christian Science, members of my family had been healed and helped in many ways. It seems odd now that it took me so long to recognize that in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and other writings of Mrs. Eddy there is outlined and made clear a perfect means of healing. On several occasions I had seen our children quickly freed from sicknesses of different kinds. At one time our youngest child was suffering from scurvy, and was unable to move her legs without terrific pain. A doctor was called, and, after diagnosing the case, he stated that it would take several weeks of a special diet to strengthen and build up her bones. That afternoon my wife called a Christian Science practitioner. By evening the child was normal, entirely free from pain. No attention was paid to her diet then or at any time. Later she was singled out in school as having as excellent posture.

No doubt I felt some gratitude at the time for such benefits; but the questioning thought invariably came, Perhaps that would have happened anyway, without Christian Science treatment. Even after I had been instantaneously healed of an extremely severe case of sinus trouble, I was besieged with doubts and the temptation to question the soundness of this method of healing.

However, I am happy to testify that one particular healing removed all doubt. For many years I had been a heavy smoker of cigarettes. Fifty to sixty cigarettes a day was the usual quota, along with a few cigars. I had tried at different times to let up on cigarettes, due to actual shame in being such a victim; but whenever there was a let-up on the cigarettes, I would increase on the cigars and turn to a pipe. The craving for tobacco was not lessened a particle. During a talk with a Christian Science practitioner about a physical condition, she asked me if I had any desire to stop smoking. After telling her that I should very much like to stop, she offered to help by giving me a Christian Science treatment.
