When Christian Science was first brought to my attention...
When Christian Science was first brought to my attention several years ago, I was a physical wreck. I had undergone several operations for tumors, appendicitis, and adhesions, without any relief, for after each operation I was worse than before. Then I became a semi-invalid, suffering with what doctors pronounced an incurable stomach trouble and probably cancer of the liver. I would be in bed for a week at a time with terrible headaches, and the only relief experienced was when I was under the influence of opiates. Finally the doctors told me that I had only about three weeks to live, as they had done all that could be done for me. They advised me to go to a higher altitude, as I was in such a rundown condition I might have tuberculosis if I did not get away soon.
In September, 1918, I arrived at the place to which I was advised to go. I was not able to walk across the street at that time. A friend who was interested in Christian Science invited me to spend a few days with her, and she told me that Christian Science could heal me. She telephoned to a practitioner and asked her to help me. The practitioner told me that God was my strength, and asked me to come to her office. In a few weeks I walked to her office, about twenty blocks, without feeling the least bit tired, and soon the headaches disappeared. In a few months I was able to go to work, and did so, as I wished to be active. I secured employment in a department store against the wishes of my friends, who feared I should not be able to stand the strain.
I knew I could work without any sense of weakness or weariness, because God was the source of my health and strength. But being employed where everyone was opposed to Christian Science, I could not do very much; for every time I had any kind of difficulty and was out of the store, a physician was sent to see me.
