Enlarging Our Borders

When Abram and Lot came up out of Egypt, they dwelt together in peace and had an abundance of material possessions. However, as time went on there was strife between the herdsmen. This led to a separation, and Lot, yielding to material sense, chose as his dwelling place the plains of Jordan. Afterwards he lost his earthly possessions and was compelled to flee for his life, owing to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abram, guided by spiritual sense, chose the land of Canaan and began to enlarge his borders by right thinking. Consequently God blessed him, and he not only prospered, but became the progenitor of a great nation, and his seed were as the stars of heaven and the sands of the sea.

There comes a time in the experience of each individual when he must choose whether he will dwell on the plain of materiality or seek the realm of spirituality. If he is to be blessed and prosper, he must lift up his eyes, enlarge the borders of his thinking, recognize Soul as substance and God as the source of all good. He will then discern the wisdom embodied in the statement found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 430), "Faith should enlarge its borders and strengthen its base by resting upon Spirit instead of matter."

A student of Christian Science was confronted with a situation which forced him to enlarge the borders of his thinking and rely upon divine Mind as the infinite source of supply. This student had considerable financial obligations which must be met by a certain date. The income from his business was not sufficient to take care of necessary expenses and to accumulate the amount needed. He had done all that seemed humanly possible to increase his business, but apparently to no avail. Fear, discouragement, and worry endeavored to dominate his thought. In this extremity he turned to his heavenly Father for help and began to enlarge his borders by spiritualizing his manner of thinking. He soon discerned that his business was not merely a means to earn a livelihood but an opportunity to serve God and benefit his fellow man. He began to realize that the only real business was God's business. Therefore, to be about his Father's business he must love God, be obedient to His will, and reflect the divine nature. He constantly declared that true business was founded on justice, honesty, and righteousness; that it was governed, controlled, and directed by divine Mind; therefore it must express activity, harmony, productiveness, and prosperity. He daily expressed more gratitude to God for His goodness and declared that in his Father's house was an abundance for all. As a result, his business began to expand rapidly; orders came in unsolicited, and money was received from unexpected sources. In ample time the funds were on hand to meet the obligation, thus demonstrating that right thinking renders God's infinite resources available to meet every right need.
