Shortly before I became interested in Christian Science...
Shortly before I became interested in Christian Science a very dear friend who was visiting me asked me to send my two little daughters to some kind of Sunday school, as they were not attending one at that time. My reply was that I would try to do so, but my heart rebelled at the thought of their possibly being taught of a hereafter after the manner I had. I say this with no thought of criticism for the dear parents who reared a large family to the very best of their understanding of Christianity; but although I united with a church when a young girl, I was not satisfied with the concept of religion which it taught.
Very soon after this respect another dear friend, one who I knew had been healed in Christian Science, asked me to accompany her to Wednesday evening testimony meeting. While we were waiting for the service to start, she told me how much the inscription on the wall meant to her: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 494). The earnestness, assurance, and gratitude of her words were new phases of Christianity to me, and before the service was over I knew I had found that for which I had longed for many years—a God to love and not to fear. The little girls were very soon attending a Christian Science School. Only those who know Christian Science can appreciate what that meant to a mother with a family to rear; my gratitude is very great for such a Sunday school.
Can I ever forget the joy over my first copy of Science and Health! We were at that time in very limited circumstances, and the price of a new copy seemed beyond my reach. I went to the Reading Room and asked the librarian if she ever had used copies for sale. "Not very often," came the prompt reply; but she very lovingly took my telephone number, and in a few days called me and said she knew of one for sale at half price. I had put aside five or ten cents each day or week, as I could spare it from my allowance of grocery money. So with a grateful heart I took home the used copy.
