On Going Apart
[Original article in German]
To go apart in prayer, to feel God's holy presence, to know one is protected and secure in His unchangeable love, to lose all pain and anxiety in His goodness and mercy, to sing with a relieved and grateful heart a song in praise of His majesty and might and goodness and love, and to awaken in His image and likeness—could there be anything more sublime or blissful?
Fundamentally, all the yearning of men indicates a deep desire to enter into the eternality of all-inclusive harmony; for that is happiness, perfection, true being. However, men experience this immortal peace not by enlarging their concept of time, their earthly concepts of time, but by renouncing them; for in true spiritual stillness only that abides which is divine, pure, true, and permanent. In the presence of divine Love mortal thought vanishes, even as darkness yields to light.
The Scriptures are replete with instances of those who sought solitude, and won therein the power and strength to rise above the tempestuous waves of mortal mind and to overcome the world. We read of Daniel, who went apart three times a day to invoke the protection and wisdom of divine Mind and to give God thanks. Again, the Bible frequently records how Jesus sought the solitude of true stillness in order that through realization of his oneness with God he might gather strength to fulfill his mission and achieve the victory of Spirit.
