Few if any outside of Christian Science have a correct conception of the teachings of Christian Science regarding the unreality of sin and the confession of sin. It is, therefore, not surprising that an evangelist should appear to have a misconception of the teachings of Christian Science on these subjects, as reported in the issue of your paper of May 9.

Mary Baker Eddy has written on page 107 of her book "Miscellaneous Writings," "Without a knowledge of his sins, and repentance so severe that it destroys them, no person is or can be a Christian Scientist;" thus indicating that both confession and repentance of sin are necessary for a Christian Scientist.

Since in Christian Science all sin consists of wrong or sinful thoughts, a knowledge of one's sins and repentance of them is clearly a mental process. Christian Science designates all evil thoughts as sinful and unreal, proceeding from the so-called mortal or "carnal" mind, as Paul has it. It was this so-called mind to which Christ Jesus referred as "a liar, and the father of it." Christian Science designates all good thoughts as real, eternal, and sinless, having their origin in the immortal divine Mind, which is God, good.
