Unity and Separation

On page 75 of "Retrospection and Introspection" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Science of Mind excludes opposites, and rests on unity." Infinite good obviously contains no evil, and equally obviously leaves no place for any assumption or presumption of evil beyond this infinity. Evil is therefore to be handled as a nonentity masquerading as an entity. In no other way can it be conquered.

All creation is united in God, good; it is invariable and indivisible. Hence the Psalmist's statement of absolute fact, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Whatever phase of error seems to induce friction between nations, families, or individuals, or to disturb the individual within himself, has no contact with God, good; and that which has no such contact is divinely unauthorized. On this ground it must be denied and dismissed from human thought. In proportion to the promptness and thoroughness of this work an individual enters into conscious unity with good.

Humility is a great asset to the Christian Scientist, for this quality, whose mission it is to promote spiritual reflection, refuses to accept anything but good. It silences mortal self-assertiveness, and puts to flight the bewildering hosts of dualistic arguments, which are as false as they are insistent. Man is wholly good and spiritual. There is nothing in man to respond to material temptation, for God's image exists only by virtue of reflection. He is conscious only of God's pure impartations, which bless and satisfy him.
