True Concept of Work

Work is one of the many things of which Christian Science helps us to get a better understanding. It is essential that we should gain a right concept of this very important subject. A dictionary will give us many definitions of work, but in the final analysis it is a mental process, expressed in various forms of activity.

Christian Science comes with a message of healing to the various phases of human belief about work, whether appearing as overwork, not enough work, uncongenial work, difficult work, work that lacks prospect of progress, or lack of any work at all. Paul gave to mankind a beautiful message, the understanding of which should heal any unhappy conditions regarding work, when he said, "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." In reality, God is the One for whom we can work, and divine Mind is the source of all activity. The understanding of this brings joy and confidence in the place of unhappiness and despondency. The healing of every problem in Christian Science lies in learning to think rightly, to correct with the understanding of Truth the false beliefs which mortal thinking presents.

If we are knowing that it is God which worketh in us "to will and to do of his good pleasure," then we can see that wrongful and hard conditions cannot have anything to do with God. God's "good pleasure" could not mean our being in a place where conditions were wrong and disagreeable, where there was lack of opportunity for progress, or where the work was unsuitable. If our thought is cleansed of false ambition, envy, discontent, and other deceiving false arguments, and instead we are cherishing the humble desire to serve God, to express love to our fellow beings, and to be a clear channel through which God can work, then there is nothing to prevent the realization of our desire for happy work with rightful opportunity for scope and progress.
