Certain Results

A student of Christian Science recently listened to an explanation of the operation of automatic telephony in a great city. After describing a new invention designed to insure a connection between subscribers, even if the usual junction lines were engaged, the engineer added, "The subscriber must have implicit faith in the system and must know that it is putting his call through although he can hear nothing for a time." It was easy to imagine impatience causing the telephone receiver to be hung up just when the circuit was nearly complete, thus postponing the conversation and causing further loss of time; and the thought presented itself, How often error would claim to defraud us of the results of our work by suggesting doubt that the demonstration is being made!

Now the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, are full of promises which will counteract this tendency, if we will heed them. The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews, for instance, declares that "he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." In other words, we must hold to the truth with implicit faith, knowing that there can be no failure on God's side.

Mankind had, however, largely lost sight of this tremendous fact until Mrs. Eddy rediscovered the Science of Christianity and revealed once more the way taken by Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, the way of at-one-ment with God, the perfect and infallible way of spiritual communion with the source of all good. Our Leader has given us many inspiring messages on this subject. On page 308 of Science and Health, referring to the wrestling of Jacob with error, she has written, "The patriarch, perceiving his error and his need of help, did not loosen his hold upon this glorious light until his nature was transformed;" and on page 261 she has shown us that if we, too, "hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true," the result is certain.
