For nineteen years I sought in vain for some system of materia medica that could heal varicose veins. While I was in a large and distant city an acute attack rendered me unable to walk without crutches, and then only in great discomfort. Again I sought the help of skilled physicians, who after a brief consultation advised me that amputation might bring relief, but gave me no assurance that the trouble would not reappear somewhere else.

A former friend, whom I had not seen for many years, lived in this city. I sought him out in my trouble, and he promptly told me of his own healing of tuberculosis when seemingly facing death, and assured me that Christian Science could also heal me. At his invitation I attended a Christian Science testimony meeting for the first time. I was astonished to hear so many testify to the healing of numerous ills, and the evident sincerity and gratitude of those testifying convinced me that they were speaking the truth.

Immediately I obtained a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was spiritually awakened on reading the first sentence in the Preface, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I needed the help and comfort that these words brought to me; they helped to banish fear. After reading the Preface, I read the chapter on Prayer, beginning, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." When I had completed the reading of the chapter on Prayer, including "the spiritual sense of the Lord's Prayer" (ibid., p. 16), I realized that I had found a "pearl of great price."
