The understanding of Christian Science, with the knowledge...
The understanding of Christian Science, with the knowledge of the Christ, was revealed to me through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, when I was wandering through the mazes of the conflicting forces of the so-called human mind, longing in vain for rest and peace. It came instantaneously, like a glorious light illumining my consciousness, to the extent that I could see the illusion of the belief of life in matter and the grand fact that infinite divine Mind has supreme control. Joyfully I set out to prove this knowledge, and found abundant proof in demonstration. Since that time, over twenty years ago, my life has been attended by many remarkable experiences. I shall relate one of them.
While dusting the dining room one day I accidentally overturned a cut-glass bottle which stood on the serving table. The bottle had a long slender neck with a glass stopper which reached far down into it. Upon righting the overturned bottle I found that the glass stopper had broken off down deep in the neck of the bottle; the top portion I held in my hand. I got a long slender knife with which to pry out the remaining portion. In the neck of the bottle was a white dust of powdered glass caused by the breakage. As I bent closely over the bottle, my knife slipped and sent a shower of these glass particles into both of my eyes. The pain was excruciating. My first thought was to run screaming into the street, for I was alone in the house. My next thought was to go to the telephone and call for help from the first person who answered. Then a voice in my consciousness said, "If you do that you will be taken to the hospital and you may lose your eyesight." Then came the feeling of being forsaken, together with a sense of hopelessness and despair. The Psalmist said, "Out of the depths have I cried unto thee;" and this is what I did. At once I heard the "still small voice" of Truth, which spoke to my disturbed thought, as audibly as any human voice which I have ever heard, these words: "You are not alone; you are in the presence of God." Instantly the maddening pain ceased, and with closed eyes I went up to my bedroom and with a piece of linen wiped off my eyelashes a crust of glass which was on them, one piece of which was jagged and in size like a small snowflake.
It was over an hour and a half before I opened my eyes and felt that I had all the tiny particles of glass removed. One, however, remained under an eyelid, but it caused no pain. The next morning that too was gone. I related this experience to my small son when he came in to dinner the day it occurred, and he said, "Mother, your eyes are not even red!" This experience has been a beacon light to me in the fifteen years that have passed since that time.
