Five years ago Christian Science found me when I was not looking for it. However, subsequent events revealed that I was very much in need of its healing power and blessings.

A friend and neighbor, a Christian Scientist, left at our house a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A few days later, while I was reading some newspapers, magazines, and other books, I noticed the book on the table. Through curiosity I picked it up and began to read it. I became interested, and read here and there in the book, finally turning to the Preface, where I read these words (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." These words were an inspiration, and later proved to be a revelation for me.

For thirty years previous to this I had been a victim of the tobacco smoking habit, which I thought was a joy and a pleasure. I was smoking a pipe of tobacco at the time I picked up and began reading Science and Health, and even during the time I was reading it, until I came to the words on page 407, where Mrs. Eddy speaks of "puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no creature except a loathsome worm." While meditating on this, I was interrupted by a call and laid the pipe down to answer it. Later I returned and resumed reading the book. Four days later I realized that I had been healed of the tobacco smoking habit, and of any desire for its false pleasure.
